The Schenectady County Public Library offers a wide variety of educational classesfor all ages. All classes are free of charge. Some require registration or an age restriction, so check our class flyers or the Events section of our homepage for specific information.
Our classes for babies are designed to be a shared library experience for children under age 2, with an adult caregiver. The instructor will share simple stories, songs, fingerplays, music and movement in a group setting. There is a great deal of research that supports the link between early literacy experiences and healthy brain development. Some classes require registration, some are drop-in. Toddler Time is a class for 2 year olds, with an adult caregiver. The instructor will introduce age appropriate stories, songs, fingerplays and simple crafts in a group setting. Adults who accompany the toddlers are encouraged to actively participate and serve as a model for their child. Early literacy concepts are an integral part of the class. This class is designed for children age 3-5 and is offered on a weekly basis. The instructor will share the best in children's literature and illustration, while also enhancing the class with songs, fingerplays, flannel board stories, puppets, crafts and more. The sessions are integrated with early literacy skills and draws on the best practices of early learning experiences.Some locations offer registered programs and some are drop-in. Many classes are held after school, on weekends, during school vacations and throughout the summer months. Librarians may share longer stories, crafts and activities. We also hire outside class instructors such as museum staff, scientists, authors, craft specialists, musicians and lots more. Check our Class calendar for all available classes.
Every summer the library conducts a reading program for children of all ages. The program is intended to make summer reading a fun activity by providing incentives of small prizes and raffles. Research clearly shows the link between summer reading and the maintenance of reading skills.

The Library Pass Program is a Museum and Cultural Pass Program for the entire family, that provides Schenectady County Public Library families with the opportunity to get reduced or free entrance fees into many of our county's cultural venues.
