IMPORTANT UPDATE ABOUT ACCESS TO COLLECTIONS AND ACCOUNTS:

Our collections will not be searchable by our staff or patrons beginning the evening of Sunday, November 24 through Thursday, December 5, when our new catalog goes live.

We expect Mohawk Valley Library System (MVLS) to disable both our staff access to their system as well as make items owned by SCPL invisible in their public catalog after our migration begins this evening, Sunday, November 24. We became aware of the MVLS plan to remove our items from the public catalog on Tuesday, November 19th and although we made a concerted effort to negotiate and advocate for reconsidering reducing service in this way, MVLS chose to preemptively cease serving our libraries. MVLS is the state cooperative public library system of which we are a member and one of the governing bodies overseeing the Joint Automation Project, which is the third party shared catalog and IT services we are currently transitioning from to bring these functions in-house.

Since our new catalog will not be accessible while the data is being migrated and loaded, this means that SCPL has no way to search our own collections. We are exploring alternate solutions and will update this post if we hear back from MVLS whether they will work with us to make our collections searchable in some capacity.

If you are looking for a particular item, please contact your nearest library location and we will happily check the shelves for it there.

We apologize for this temporary situation and look forward to providing full access and service when our catalog is up and running; thank you for bearing with us.

Update 11/27/2024:

We have heard from patrons that their holds in the MVLS catalog are being cancelled; unfortunately this is not something we are doing or received any notice of however we want to assure you when our new catalog is ready we will have record of your holds and will resume working to fill them.

MVLS has disabled our staff access to the current catalog system as well as made SCPL items invisible when searching the public catalog and on patron accounts before our new catalog is ready. Due to this, when you search the current catalog or check your account, you will not see any SCPL items (even if they are currently checked out to you). MVLS has offered us a spreadsheet of the items we own in lieu of the catalog ; if you are looking for something please contact us and we are happy to search the list to see if we own it and check our shelves. Unfortunately we have no workaround to check your account for you with our access disabled so please contact MVLS or any other library within MVLS or SALS for assistance with that until our new system is up and running 12/5, at which time we would love to assist you.

Thank you for bearing with us through this unexpected period of effectively no catalog; this is not typical in a migration process and we sincerely regret it is beyond our control to effect a more seamless transition. Once our new catalog system is ready, we look forward to starting implementation of the many exciting service improvements we have planned.
